Omni Directional Antennas
This type of antenna is such type of antenna as produces an isotropic radiation pattern which is known as “Doughnut” shape. Note that, true isotropic antennas will be purely theoretical compared with other types of Omni directional antennas. There are many subtypes of Omni directional antennas which have been looked at below.
The vertical Omni antennas are usually based on a dipole design wherein the radiation pattern of a dipole antenna is 360k degrees in the horizontal plane. But the radiation pattern of the antenna with vertical plane varies, depending on whether the dipole is vertical or not. A vertically orientated dipole antenna normally has a radiation pattern of 75 degrees. This type of Omni directional antenna is considered to have a gain, on an average of a little over 2 Db.
Ceiling domes are one of the most widely used broadband communications antennas and are designed to be mounted on wall or ceiling. Since they have fewer obstructions, these antennas have relatively a high gain of around 3 Db. While the rubber ducks that were first used with early walkie talkies as a cut-down whip aerial designed at one-quarter wavelength are said to be electrically short antennas. They have a wire type of element covered with a rubber sheathing that makes the antennas flexible and robust. They are vertically mounted and have a 360-degree radiation pattern similar to that of a half-wave dipole.
Directional Antennas
This type of antenna comes with reflecting and radiating elements that are added to the standard di-pole design. Those elements help to concentrate the signal energy in the desired direction. The directional antennas are more advanced version and give a gain over the standard isotropic antennas.
Yagi antennas are one of the most prominent subtypes of directional antennas. They are known as high gain antennas and have multiple reflectors and radiating elements which give a typical gain of between 12 and 20 Db. And so they are best used as outdoor antennas.
