The good news is that Dholera Airport shall be ready by 2020 and boost up the economic activities that are being weaved up in the city.

Alkesh Sharma, chief executive officer and managing director of DMICDC told Business Standard : “Both DSIR and Dholera International Airport will be engines of economic growth in the state of Gujarat in the coming years, as both projects will see operations of Phase-I by the end of 2018.”

The international airport facility is being built to serve the Ahmedabad-Dholera SIR region. Due to a steady increase in the air traffic in Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad airport shall be saturated by 2020. This had given rise to the need for an immediate solution that shall cater to the rising passenger and thus Dholera International Airport came into being. Apart from this, another reason that gave way for the facility was to connect Dholera seamlessly to the world. The city is being envisioned as a global trading and manufacturing hub and shall also be a preferred worldwide investment destination. Thus, it is imperative for it to be easily accessible by people across the globe.

Dholera airport  Project shall have two runways measuring 2,910 meters and 4,000 meters each and shall be able to accommodate 12000 Indian and international passengers at once. 1,426 hectares land has been kept aside for the project by State Governmentin the name of Gujarat Industrial Corridor Company Ltd (GICC), 20 kilometers from Dholera and 80 kilometers from Ahmedabad. Other cities and towns that can conveniently use the facility include Nadiyad, Bhavnagar, Vadodara and Rajkot. The land allotted for the project fall under the Dhanduka Taluka in the villages of Pipli, Paccham and Valinda.

The proposal to set up Dholera Airport was initiated by Hon’ble Chief Minister years back in 2008 vide a proposal to Hon’ble Minister of Civil Aviation. The approvals and nod from the Civil Aviation Ministry has been recently received and the project is all set to take off. Estimated cost for the project is Rs. 1,712 crores and it shall be built in three phases. The project shall be jointly developed by the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation and the Gujarat government.

DMIC envisions building DSIR as an aerotropolis, a metropolitan region where the airport centric commercial activities drives the infrastructure and economy of the region.Transport routes are being planned in the city in a manner that the residents can easily and economically connect to the airport. The airport has also been included in the list of ‘Early Bird Project’ and has been fast tracked by the government.

Dholera airportshall be built as a world class facility with remarkable infrastructure and premium technology to meet the demand of the impending economic pressure the region is due for.
